Dominican Hospital has begun providing 400 free diapers to every newborn delivered at its Santa Cruz facility through a statewide initiative aimed at easing the financial burden on new families.
The hospital is the first in Santa Cruz County to participate in Golden State Start, a partnership between the nonprofit Baby2Baby and the state of California. Dominican is among about 35 hospitals statewide in the program’s initial rollout.
“We want to ensure that every expecting parent in our region knows that by choosing to deliver at Dominican Hospital, they are choosing a birth experience supported by tangible, essential care for their child,” said Christine McSweeney, Dominican Hospital president.
Baby2Baby provides diapers, clothing and other basic necessities to children from low-income families. The Golden State Start initiative aims to help families focus on their newborns’ health and well-being by providing essential supplies.
Dominican’s Family Birth Center averages about 65 deliveries per month, or 800 births annually, and is home to Santa Cruz County’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
