There is nothing quite as central to Bonny Doon as the elementary school. In an effort to fund essential science, music and art programs at Bonny Doon Elementary, the Bonny Doon Community School Foundation is preparing to host its annual art, wine and brew festival this weekend.
“The elementary school is kind of the heart of Bonny Doon,” said Michael Geluardi, parent of a first-grader at the school and one of the organizers for the festival. “This event is truly an authentic affirmation of our community.”
On June 2, the 16th annual festival will be held at the Bonny Doon Equestrian Park offering wine and beer tastings included with the price of admission.
The funds raised will all go towards the Bonny Doon Community School Foundation. The all-volunteer organization was founded in 1995 as a means of supporting public education by creating opportunities for learning and promoting educational excellence for the children of Bonny Doon.
The festival last year raised approximately $50,000 for the educational foundation, according to Geluardi. Geluardi is in charge of ticketing, the event’s website and managing the gate. Carolina DaCosta, Ruby Lipsenthal and Rachel Beauregard are the co-chairs who help lead the event.
“It truly has a neighborhood feel,” Geluardi said. “The school really is the institution that brings Bonny Dooners’ together.”
In addition to the beer and wine tastings from several local breweries and wineries, there is a live auction hosted by auctioneer-extraordinaire John West returning to entertain and get the crowd bidding on a great collection of amazing trips, experiences, and unique items, and over 20 artisans will be setting up booths to sell crafts and goods.
The event is for adults ages 21 and older, a decision that according to Geluardi is intended to allow parents and adults a chance to enjoy the event kid-free for a change.
This year Geluardi expects 700 people to attend and take part in the event. According to him, because the event has grown in size each year soon a new permit will be needed to accommodate the popularity.
“The feelings that people have for this event are so meaningful,” Geluardi said.
