A Texas man was killed Friday afternoon when his car shot off of Highway 1 near Davenport and careened over a steep cliff into the sea.

The California Highway Patrol said the  29-year-old man, from Dallas, was driving a black 2017 Subaru Outback north of Scott Creek Bridge on Highway 1 just before 3:30pm.

For unknown reasons, the SUV veered off the roadway and plunged off a cliff. The vehicle reportedly rolled numerous times before landing in the ocean.

When emergency officials from Cal Fire, the CHP and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office arrived they spotted the partially submerged Subaru a short distance from shore. When rescue swimmers reached the car and managed to free the man, he pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing and tests are being conducted to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were involved.
