News Briefs

A major maintenance paving project on Highway 9 began Aug. 19, taking place between Lazy Woods Road in Felton and California Drive in Ben Lomond.

This 2.7-mile paving project will grind off the top layer of existing asphalt pavement and overlay the roadway with the same respective thicknesses using rubberized hot mix asphalt.

A total of seven existing curb ramps within the project limits will also be reconstructed to bring them to current standards for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

One-way reversing traffic control will be in effect during both daytime and overnight work hours. Travelers can expect intermittent daytime and overnight delays associated with this work.

Residents in the immediate vicinity of paving work may encounter intermittent noise and vibration associated with paving activities.

Daytime curb ramp work in Ben Lomond also began Aug. 19, but only in shoulder areas, and will not result in any traffic delays.

Overnight paving work with associated traffic delays will not begin until mid-September. Updates will be provided for every phase of the project.

The contractor for this $2.4 million project is Granite Construction. This paving project is scheduled to conclude Oct. 30.

Library to host program honoring 4-year anniversary of CZU fire

Santa Cruz Public Libraries (SCPL) is hosting a program to honor the four-year anniversary of the devastating CZU Lightning Complex Fire, by acknowledging grief and loss and celebrating renewal. The program will take place in the Felton Branch Library Community Room on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 2-4pm.

The Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing and dreaming through dialogue. This introduction to the Heavy Lifting project opens with a display of Felicia Rice’s artists’ book and the experimental film, “On Heavy Lifting,” followed by a conversation between poet Theresa Whitehill and the audience, in which she alternates reading her poems with an invitation for audience members to share their own work or stories in response.

The tour kicked off in February 2023 in Ukiah and has occurred monthly in communities impacted by fire throughout northern California. The project explores a range of responses to loss as it considers what might lie beyond these difficult times, from creating space to name the darkness as the first stage of recovery from grief to building strength to tackle the unending work ahead.

In Felton, the event will mark the fourth anniversary of the CZU Lightning Complex Fire, which devastated the Santa Cruz Mountain communities of friends, families and neighbors, including Felicia’s Bonny Doon neighborhood. The public is invited to join this commemoration of loss and celebration of community and resilience.
