The CZU August Lightning Complex Fire continues to affect residents far and wide in Santa Cruz County. Thousands of people are evacuated from their homes and experiencing loss due to fires all across the West Coast and beyond. What a remarkable time. Roaring Camp Railroad’s steam train malfunction caused accident
Around noon on Monday, December 28, while the train was on the tracks looping around Bear Mountain, it was unable to come to a stop and rolled forward into a dirt hillside. Apparently the train’s throttle was stuck as it was coming to a stop on the tracks during a point of the trip where the vehicles switch to head back in reverse, according to Felton Fire Protection Chief Ron Rickabaugh.
Final Leg of the Torch Run
The official torch for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angels 2015 is called the Flame of Hope. On July 16, 2015, it was carried through the city of Scotts Valley. A ceremony was held at Canepa Designs, 4900 Scotts Valley Drive. Mayor Dene Bustichi, Chief John Weiss, and Special Olympic athlete and Final Leg runner Jazmine Slama from Utah were speakers. Law Enforcement officers and Special Olympic athletes are selected to be one of the 126 Final Leg Team members based on their commitment and dedication to the Special Olympic movement. During the Final Leg of the Torch Run, Law Enforcement officers from around the world will be spreading the message of inclusion and acceptance for those with intellectual disabilities. On July 25, 2015 the Flame of Hope will complete its journey when it is carried into the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 World Games. Local historian explores the railroading past of Santa Cruz County
In the days before Highway 9 and Highway 17, the most efficient way for Santa Cruz County residents to travel was by train. From the 1870s until the eve of World War II, railroad tracks snaked their way through the landscape of the Santa Cruz Mountains, with lines connecting Santa Cruz and San Jose, as well as traversing the San Lorenzo Valley.

Wild Roots Market begins its story
The new sign hangs outside, “Wild Roots,” and for store owner Bob Locatelli this is just the beginning of telling his own story. On April 2, the formerly New Leaf grocery stores in Felton and Boulder Creek, officially became entirely independent stores under the name Wild Roots Market.
The results are in, mostly
Nearly half the registered voters in Santa Cruz County took part in electing a new governor, voting on nine state propositions and putting a handful of local officials into office. However, these results come with a disclaimer. In Santa Cruz County alone, there are 15,000 to 20,000 mail-in ballots that have not been tallied. Also, about 5,000 provisional ballots have not yet been verified, County Clerk Gail Pellerin said.
