2009 Year in Review

By historical standards, the year 2009 will likely be remembered most as President Obama’s first in the Oval Office. Congress passed stimulus packages of all shapes and sizes, and the nation’s military presence in Afghanistan increased in an effort to quell rising violence there. But in the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley, the ebb and flow of the economy seemed to drive the news this year. Here’s a look back on the year’s biggest events in our community.

Charles Albert Discoe Jr.: Sept. 9, 1917 — Feb. 20, 2013

Services are planned March 23 for Charles Albert Discoe Jr., a longtime Scotts Valley general contractor, who died Feb. 20 at his home in Murphys. He was 95.

Derek Timm and Jim Reed elected to Scotts Valley City Council

Although the vote count is yet to be certified, Derek Timm, a newcomer to the Scotts Valley City Council, received the most votes in a three-way race with two incumbents seeking reelection. Jim Reed, a long-term incumbent and current mayor, came in second.  Stephany Aguilar, after more than 20 years of distinguished service on the council, was unable to successfully defend her seat.
