Prescribed burn in Big Basin this week

California Parks crews teamed with Cal Fire plan to conduct a vegetation management burn in Big Basin Redwoods State Park starting Wednesday, Oct. 19.
The prescribed burn, officials say, will take several days and clear excess vegetation from approximately 800 acres.
The location of the burn is between Johansen Road, Gazos Creek Road and Middle Ridge in northern Santa Cruz County and southern San Mateo County.
Cal Fire’s Santa Clara Unit, the Santa Cruz Fire Department, along with local fire protection districts including Central, Scotts Valley, Ben Lomond, Branciforte, Aptos-La Selva, and the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District will cooperate to conduct the burn.
Firefighters will be on hand through all the phases of burning and will patrol the fire area until the burn is completely out.
Cal Fire warns that smoke may be seen coming from the burn area for several days, but is not a cause for alarm.
