Healthy Living: One-way ticket to Alcatraz
I've always heard of the Alcatraz swims but never thought I'd actually do one. About two months ago, my friend Corvin — a determined athlete who is losing both his sight and hearing due to Usher Syndrome — asked me to guide him for the Escape from the Rock (Alcatraz) duathlon. Impulsively, I agreed to guide him for the 1.5-mile swim leg. About two seconds after I sent the email, it hit me that I’d just volunteered to swim from Alcatraz, in shark-infested waters, with extremely strong currents, tied to another person. Does this qualify as temporary insanity?
Commentary: Vote for Measure F to support our county parks
Santa Cruz County parks are a well-loved resource for the community. I’m heartened to see children bicycling around the Covered Bridge Park and to see the hundreds of children playing baseball and climbing the “tower” at Highlands Park and thousands of people who enjoy visiting Quail Hollow Park.

The Mountain Gardener: Dreaming of summer roses
I'm daydreaming about the flowers of spring and summer. What could be more impressive than a big, fragrant, jewel-toned rose? There are some great new ones out this year that I have my eye on. Maybe you have room for one more.

Untarnished etiquette: Manners on the roadway
Driving etiquette encompasses general rules of courtesy when we operate vehicles.
Editor’s notebook: Superbowl or bust
I was in Denver, Colo. last week and Bronco fever has swept the city. The Peyton Manning-led Broncos have the most prolific offense in NFL history and Bronco fans are optimistic that a Superbowl trophy is in reach after winning the AFC West and grabbing a first round bye.
