I'll be vacationing the next week in southern Mexico, traveling east from the state of Chiapas to the Yucatan peninsula. In addition to exploring ruins, waterfalls, cenotes and flamingo breeding grounds, I'll be especially interested in the local plants, which vary from hardwood forests of mahogany and cedar to tropical.

It's rewarding to grow your own fruit and vegetables, but more and more of us also want to grow flowers that can be cut and enjoyed inside, too. Growers are taking notice of this trend, and there are more cut-flower varieties available today than ever before.

When it comes to ocean fishing, you can take your pick, as many species are biting. Offshore waters have produced albacore, while along the canyon edges, salmon fishing remains strong. Inshore fishing for rockfish, lingcod and halibut has been very good. Striped bass continue to be caught along the beaches for shore-based anglers.

Throughout the year, I am asked for design help and plant suggestions, but it’s at this time of year that I especially hear the request; “I’d love to add more grasses to my garden.”
