Editor’s notebook: Calling all lemons
The wedding is less than two weeks away and there are several thoughts swirling through my head. Top of the list: Where can I find a good hamburger? Actually, that question arises only at lunchtime and I don’t think it’s wedding-related. Here’s a sampling of what’s going on in my brain in the days leading up to the ceremony:
Crisis calls for alternatives
California’s budget crisis and the governor’s proposed $24 billion dollars of cuts and borrowing have provoked thousands of constituents to contact me. Educators, in-home support service (IHSS) providers, healthy families advocates, state parks supporters, and many others have lodged strong opposition to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s May revised budget proposals that seek to balance California’s budget on the backs of our state’s most vulnerable and needy.
Commentary: Better ways to manage feral cats
Everyone appreciated the rescue tips about baby birds from Carol Carson's column, “Domestic cats pose serious threat to native wildlife,” (March 15, Page 9) published last week. However, she had one alarming suggestion to “rent cages from the County Animal Shelter for capturing cats and transferring them to the shelter.” But once there, a friendly cat is capable of adoption and an “unfriendly” feral cat meets a deadly double standard: By contrast, it is deemed unadoptable and will be killed.
