Nature Friendly: Guardian of the rivers and the fish
If you do not know what you are looking for, you probably will not find it. I learned that recently as Kristen Kittleson, county fisheries resource planner, and I climbed down a rocky bank to the San Lorenzo River. Immediately she saw a group of lamprey and walked out into the water in her waders to point them out to me.

Commentary: Scotts Valley at its tipping point
As the Great Depression waned and the first touring Chevvies and Deusies roared across Santa Cruz Mountains to the Pacific, Scotts Valley was right where it needed to be: perfectly placed to greet those pioneer motor-venturers with a hot drink at Camp Evers, a restock of provisions and, by all accounts, a roaring foxtrot. In short, our little rest stop on the California Trail began its own adventurous economic journey out of the Great Depression into the brave new mobile world.
Guard-friendly Cougars look toward basket
The San Lorenzo Valley varsity boys basketball team opened practice Monday night, Dec. 7, by running more than a dozen suicides — sprints from baseline to free-throw line, half court, the opposite free-throw line and the opposite baseline. In between suicides, the varsity team shot free throws.
