Find plants with intrigue for several seasons

Driving east to Yosemite recently, I was reminded of how diverse botanically and geologically is the state of California.

Commentary: Polo Barn demolition decision should be delayed

On November 11, 2013 a public notice was sent out stating the Scotts Valley City Council was considering an agreement to allow the demolition of the historic Polo Barn complex. This notice was announced by mail and sent only to those residents that resided within 300 feet of the Polo Ranch development. The notice further stated that in just nine days time the demolition approval would be discussed at the City Council meeting. For residents interested in historic and recreational resources in the city this change was a complete surprise as this revised agreement had not been disclosed or discussed with the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, the Scotts Valley Historical Society or at any other public forum before the November 20, 2013 City Council meeting.

Talk about money: New rules for 401(k)s can help avoid storm

A major crux of my musings in recent columns has been the copious tax increases that are scheduled for 2011 and beyond. Like a lighthouse on a rocky shore, I have cast a light on the hazards in front of you, giving you ample time to change course and avoid a collision.

Your Health: Cancer in remission, time to look ahead

I am in remission of my multiple myeloma cancer. The three months of chemotherapy last fall and winter did a great job in knocking out most of those cancerous plasma cells which were taking over my body. The stem-cell transplant I was originally to have following chemotherapy has been canceled. I will have my blood tested regularly to monitor my remission. My thanks to Dr. Michael Wu and his wonderful caring staff at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation oncology department who did a superb job treating my disease.

Commentary: Be kind all the time

Sadly, the ending of the year 2012 will mostly be remembered for man’s inhumanity to man as witnessed in the town of Newtown, Conn.

Let’s go fishin’: Crab season starts with a bang

Crab boilers are at full steam with a robust season that started Nov. 5. The season is expected to be a good one, and Monterey Bay crabbers are already loading the decks with tasty crustaceans.

Nature Friendly: A geologist with many irons in the fire

Noted geologist Frank Perry has become a local Renaissance man of sorts. Not only has he been a standout leader on our annual geology walks along the San Lorenzo River — his third one will be June 18 — but he has signed on to create six outdoor interpretive signs at University of California, Santa Cruz.
