Commentary: Mayor’s thoughts for 2010, 2011

I would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas, happy New Year and happy holidays. We all celebrate this special time of year differently, and in whichever way you choose to enjoy your family and friends, I hope nothing but the best for you all.

The Mountain Gardener: Keep deer away this spring

There's something about babies. You know that feeling, when you see a new infant and can't help but gush, "How cute and tiny!" It's universal to be drawn to new life. That applies to other babies in the animal kingdom, too. Last Tuesday morning, I was delighted when I saw two tiny fawns in my driveway with their mother.

Our recommendation: ‘No’ on all props

As much as it pains us to say this, we cannot support any of the six propositions in Tuesday’s special election. We urge you to vote — and to vote no.

Driving through northern Canada and Alaska some years ago, I was struck by the amount of litter and trash I encountered. The striking terrain and natural beauty all around made such clueless disregard seem particularly onerous.
