I was 8 or 9 years old and being raised by my elderly aunt in Aberdeen, Wash., when I discovered dog biscuits. Having no dog of my own I was quite impressed by those cute little bone-shaped dog treats.

Commentary: Water rate increase more about pet projects than improvements

When elected to the board of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District last November, I was pleased to have the opportunity to work with people I respect. The long-serving majority played a highly positive role in the sale of the Waterman Gap property and the acquisition of the Felton water system. I am, however, disappointed by their support of the proposed five year rate hike.

It’s July already, and plants are growing like there's no tomorrow. The hummingbirds are my constant companions in the garden, and the resident deer population comes by daily. There are two spotted fawns who now accompany their mother, along with a couple of her sisters. Life is good.

The Mountain Gardener: Plant groundcover before hillsides wash away

Getting caught out in the rain last month was a timely reminder that the rainy season will soon be upon us. The “Farmer's Almanac” predicts our "winter will be much rainier and cooler than normal." Weather bloggers are posting an impressive number of charts and figures that predict a general dry trend, while the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says we have an equal chance of precipitation totals going either way.
