The Mountain Gardener: Beautiful plants don’t always need much water

There are so many great plants that don't require a lot of water to look beautiful. It's always a plus if they attract hummingbirds and other wildlife. Some favorites are so reliable that we consider them tried and true. Who doesn't want to include more plants like this in the garden? On the lookout for cultivars of old favorites, I came across a few that I plan to include this year in my own garden and also in upcoming drought tolerant designs. I'm excited.

Let’s Go Fishin’: Fishing still fun as fall approaches

It is that back-to-school time of year, so I hope you fit in some great fishing during the summer. If you still have that desire to get out on the water, there are still some prime local fishing picks.

The Mountain Gardener: Miniaturize the Sierra’s in your own backyard

Maybe we can't improve on Mother Nature but can we learn from her to make our own gardens more beautiful. My late summer travels this year took me to Lake Mary in the Mammoth Lake area where I began to get ideas. This small Sierra lake formed in a depression in the glacial moraine below majestic Crystal Crag. Dozens of small streams keep the meadows blooming with wildflowers even in August. Huge granite slabs and obsidian domes create an impressive landscape. Everywhere I looked I saw how the plants, stone and water came together to make a combination that would look incredible in a regular garden.

The Mountain Gardener: Ten hot plants

It's not just another garden show, it's the world-renowned San Francisco Flower and Garden show — and it was the perfect start to spring at the end of March.
