Damians Ladder helps Valley seniors in need

Damians Ladder
San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley are chock-full of character and conveniences that most other towns would be lucky to have: breathtaking natural beauty, great schools, plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining, and cohesive, neighborly communities.  Residents work together, play together, celebrate holidays together...

SLVHS -Moving through S.I.P with creativity

The saying, “Same stuff, different day” has never felt more apropos. The hours and days are running into each other as weeks of sheltering-in-place leave us yearning for normalcy, and a return for the simple joys of life: lounging maskless on a beach, playing softball or bridge or poker with friends, relaxing into a pedicure, and taking in a good movie. In a theater. With popcorn and strangers and those weird fruit candies that get stuck in your back teeth.

New Faces

August James Bradshaw was born at 2:21 a.m. Feb. 1, 2013, to Katherine Louise (Flynn) and Mark David Bradshaw of Mount Hermon. He was delivered at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center of Santa Cruz, where he weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

The Mountain Gardener: Gardener recalls gardens worldwide

I started writing this column in October 2005. I remember the day the editor of the paper at that time gave me the go-ahead and bestowed upon me the title, “The Mountain Gardener.”  I was so excited. I immediately started writing down every subject I could think of. In the world of horticulture there are myriad subjects to write about and nearly as many different plants. I'll never run of ideas.

Bonsai or Tree Art?

Robert Stoll joined Santa Cruz Bonsai Kai in 1989 two months after it started. He and I have something in common. We both have won a bonsai specimen that remains one of our favorites. His will be featured at the club’s upcoming bonsai exhibit while mine lives a quietly on my patio.

Can the U.S really stop global warming?

“We are concerned about the end of the world, but we are also concerned about the end of the month.” Those are the words of a Yellow Vest protestor after France, in an effort to combat global warming, announced it would raise gas taxes by 30 cents, bringing the price to about $7.36 a gallon. The plan led to riots in the streets of Paris and has since been suspended.

Untarnished Etiquette: Tea time!

Afternoon tea is one of the fastest growing trends in America.
