Let’s Go Fishin’: Short-term salmon prospects look promising

The returning numbers from last fall for Chinook salmon are promising, while future years may be of concern. The counts have come in from the Sacramento River and its tributaries and they were higher than expected.

The Mountain Gardener: Keep it simple for interesting garden design

This is the time of year when all things seem possible. You might be planning improvements to the vegetable garden. Maybe you’re also thinking of adding a focal point, like a small accent tree or garden art to one of the perennial beds. Immel, Brooks tie the knot

Jeremy Immel, son of Andy and Cathy Immel of Boulder Creek, and Demerris Brooks, daughter of Dennis and Rebecca Donaldson of San Jose, were married April 19 on Kauai, Hawaii.

Nature Friendly: Walking where Indians walked

When I drive to the top of Bear Creek Road, looking down to Loch Lomond Reservoir and across the bay to the Ventana Wilderness, I imagine what our land would have looked like before the European invasion. What grew here? Ate here? Roamed here? What mark would American Indians have made?

The Mountain Gardener: Reconnecting with agricultural roots

We humans used to be mostly foragers and obtained our nutrition before the end of the last ice age by being hunter-gatherers.
