From Coma to Comedy: Bryan Stow’s Second Act
Bryan Stow is the face—and body—of courage, grit and determination. His skull is partially sunken, his scalp is criss-crossed with surgical scars and he walks with the aid of crutches, yet Stow (not so humbly) embodies the characteristics that people admire, his wicked sense...
The Mountain Gardener: Keep it simple for interesting garden design
This is the time of year when all things seem possible. You might be planning improvements to the vegetable garden. Maybe you’re also thinking of adding a focal point, like a small accent tree or garden art to one of the perennial beds. And you really need to do something about that view outside the picture window. It needs more year-round appeal. After all, you spend a lot of time looking out there.
Quercetin A Natural Anti-Viral and Anti-Inflammatory
Quercetin one of the most widely distributed flavonoids in plants. Its main natural sources in foods are lettuce, asparagus, onions, broccoli, fruits (apples, berry crops, and grapes), tea and wine. Quercetin is known for its antioxidant activity in radical scavenging and anti-allergic properties characterized by stimulation of immune system, antiviral activity, inhibition of histamine release and decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines. All mentioned mechanisms of action contribute to the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties of quercetin that can be effectively utilized in treatment of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Plant extract of quercetin is the main ingredient of many potential anti-allergic drugs and supplements. ("Molecules". 2016 May)
Let’s go fishin’: An ocean salmon season looks promising

The steelhead season closed with what seemed to be a healthy return of fish in our local streams.

When the famous Greek philosopher Heraclitus constructed his doctrine of change being central to the universe, with the thesis that “nothing endures but change,” he might have been peering into the future, witnessing the state of our tax and legislative system in the U.S., circa 2010.
Gardener: Winter is time to choose bare-root trees
Every year about this time, I get excited about what fruit trees I'm going to recommend for those who want to start a home orchard or add to their edible gardens. Will this be the year you get a Cox's Orange Pippin apple or an American Golden Russet? Maybe an oldie but goodie like a Golden Delicious apple will become the treasure of your family. But, then again, there's the Mutsu, a favorite of connoisseurs, which might get the nod.
Scotts Valley Square trees returning
The Scotts Valley Square Shopping Center is currently undergoing Phase I of a remodel project and great things will be happening throughout the year. Don’t despair, although Phase I included removal of the hardscape in the shopping center, new plant material and colorful trees will be coming.
A gift from Santa’s postal elf
Every year for the past few years, in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, I’ve enjoyed a very special duty. My mail carrier brings me all the letters that local children write to Santa Claus.
