Rockfish and lingcod season started out slowly April 1, and is rapidly building momentum. Salmon season launched days later with hit-and-miss results.

Back to School Photo contest

Back-to-School winner! Bay Photo has selected Collin Donagher  of Scotts Valley as the winner of the 2017 Bay Photo Back to School Photo contest! Collin, a first grader at Ocean Grove Charter, will receive an 8x10 Dream Print mounted on a Bamboo panel. This photo was taken by his mom, Kim Pinard. 

Valley Neighbors: Bright future for valley runner

Wearing a red national team uniform, San Lorenzo Valley High School senior Anna Maxwell represented the United States junior team at the Bupa Great XC International Challenge Run. This event was held in Edinburgh, Scotland on January 11. Only six girls were chosen to compete on the youth team in this 4000-meter race. Maxwell finished 11th overall and 3rd on her team in 14 minutes, 32 seconds. Battling a soggy, wet course with rolling hills and a creek to cross, she was the only high school girl on the U.S. team.

The Mountain Gardener: Get a little wild in the garden

I confess — I’m a lazy gardener. In July, my idea of working in the garden consists of removing seed pods from the fuchsias and trimming a few parsley and basil sprigs for dinner. I don’t have to spend time spraying for harmful insects and diseases, because the birds and other creatures I encourage in my garden provide natural pest control. Having wildlife in the garden saves time and money, too.

Let’s go fishin’: Changes in fishing season reflected on local docks

The weather is not the only thing that changes in the fall. Many fishing seasons close and others open at this time of year. Sport fishing, commercial fishing and even our local markets change in regard to what local seafood we can catch or buy.
