The Mountain Gardener: Wintry weather means down time for gardeners

‘Twas the weekend after Thanksgiving and all through the house, not a creature was stirring — not even a gardener. I should probably do something productive, but what? Should I be good and do a little light weeding? Maybe I can muster up the energy to plant a few more bulbs. Come spring, I’ll be happy I did. Then again, I could make notes of my gardening successes and not-so-great horticultural decisions. “I know,” I say to myself, “this weekend I’ll revel in what I don’t have to do in the garden”.

Addressing Scotts Valley’s facility needs

I imagine that most readers are aware that California will be holding its Primary Election on March 3, 2020.  Besides the many important offices that will be on the ballot, there is a lesser-known proposition that can provide vital funding for school facilities modernization and new construction.  With a certain ironic twist, this will be Proposition 13.  No, this proposition has no impact on how property taxes are assessed, or collected – it has nothing to do with the Proposition 13 that was passed in 1978.

Mountain Gardener: Find color without flowers

The flowering trees and shrubs of tropical Maui are behind me, and I’m back in our temperate rain forest of redwood trees and all things green. Sure, a few early blooming shrubs are flowering this time of year and are a welcome sight, but I look for color in other places. If you’re looking around your garden now and see mostly green, here are a few suggestions to brighten things up.

Plain Talk About Food: Breads rising and baking in Felton

My La Cloche dome bread baker has been relegated to the garage ever since the smells from I Rise Bakery’s owner, Gardner Lund’s sourdough wheat bread reached my nostrils as I was passing Felton Feed Store a few days ago.

It seems like I’m always reading a gardening magazine or online blog or Googling some horticultural-related topic. There is so much useful information out there.
