His famous cousin would probably have arrived in Ben Lomond on a water-smooth silvery stallion, but Frederick A. Cody rode in on the train. Admittedly, Buffalo Bill was a distant cousin, but F. A. Cody probably profited from the connection. A traveling sales specialist for an electric light company, he provided systems for small cities, and also promoted stock companies to fund them. During an extended stay in Mexico, Cody carefully built up his capital nest egg, waiting for an opportunity like that offered by D. W. Johnston, who was ready to unload his property in Ben Lomond.

The Scotts Valley Bocce Club surprised everyone, including themselves, proving to be a tough contender at the 2011 U.S. National Championships at Campo Di Bocce in Los Gatos. The team took second overall in the national competition that saw teams travel from New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Maine to compete in the annual tournament.

While things begin to feel, perhaps, a little more claustrophobic at home, know that you can know participate with community members across the world in celebrating our essential workers!  The trend of evening clapping to thank workers began in Wuhan, China, and is quickly catching on throughout the globe from Paris, to New York City, Buenos Aires, Seville, Atlanta, and Amsterdam.  It’s even spread to our valleys!  If you have yet to join, I advise you to, like the spouse of Boulder Creek resident Nicki Petruzzella Kerns, set an alarm for 7:57 pm and amble outside after it goes off.  Ever since March 28th, our valleys have been filling with howls of appreciation at 8:00pm, for those continuing to work against the virus. 

In December 1895, when weather permitted, promoter Fred Swanton and electrician Ed Lilly escorted a team of experts — sawmill men, flume builders, hydraulic engineers, and a surveyor — to the intended site of the water-powered electric plant on Big Creek.
