Nature Friendly: A walking and writing retreat in the park

"A thousand times a day, nature--in the most ordinary of places--has something to tell or show us; something it wants us to touch, smell, or feel; something it wants all of us, not just the overtly artistic, to express."

The Mountain Gardener: The music of the garden

Each time I'm in my garden it's a different experience. The familiar buzz of hummingbird wings brings a smile to my face. Sometimes it's the silence that gets my attention. Where are the chirping songbirds or the raucous scolding of the jays? Where is the wind, the rustling of the forest grass leaves? Other times the quaking of the redwood boughs a hundred feet up makes the garden come alive like giant wind chimes. Sound adds dimension to the garden.

I’m writing about a subject that may not be too appealing or romantic, but it’s something that pretty much affects all of us. I recently wrote about hearing loss and mentioned that a frequent cause of this was from blockage due to ear wax, also called cerumen.

Valley Politics: Will They Just Watch it Burn?

Among the few things that we truly fear in the San Lorenzo Valley are mountain lions, flooding, earth quakes, and fires.  When a state entity institutes a program to help combat one of them, it should make sense that it would be whole-heartedly embraced.  However, that has not been the case for Cal Fire’s Fire Prevention “Fee” that was first levied upon Valley home-owners in 2012.  Come October 10th we will be paying our second round of fees.

Commentary: Lompico residents suffer from water board’s decisions

The Lompico County Water District will be holding a Public Hearing to discuss the proposed rate increase. These hearings are a mere formality. Nothing discussed will change the minds of the Board of Directors. The only avenue available to those in opposition to the rate increase is to send a letter, directly to the Lompico County Water District office, stating your opposition to the rate increase. If 255 letters are received representing a majority of the meter holders, (simply being a voter is not enough) in opposition to the rate increase it will be blocked. Otherwise, the Board of Directors will pass the rate increase with a simple majority vote.
