The Scotts Valley Falcons played Half Moon Bay High tough Sept. 10, getting out to a 14-12 lead early in the third quarter before turnovers and a punishing Cougar running attack produced a blowout fourth quarter to seal a 39-14 Half Moon Bay win.

In 2005, when Scotts Valley faced 12 percent operating shortfalls with virtually no reserves, the city asked voters to support Measure C, a temporary five-year increase in the sales tax. I was not on the City Council then but backed Measure C because I believed there wasn’t a credible alternative and that city leaders could be trusted if they said more revenues were temporarily needed.

August marked the 75th anniversary of Social Security in America. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, and the program has remained through the decades as one of the only certainties for the American workforce.

After a consistent run of salmon in Monterey Bay, the season came to an end Monday, Sept. 6. When one door closes, another opens, and salmon fishing will be available in the Sacramento, Klamath and Trinity rivers.

The 2010 influenza season officially begins in October, but cases of flu in some areas of the country have already been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The infection usually peaks in January, February and March and usually ends by May. It is impossible to predict ahead of time how bad the flu season might be, but as we learned with the H1N1 (swine flu) last year, it’s best to be prepared.
