The Mountain Gardener: A rose garden for the ages

Under blue skies on a perfect spring day I sat recently with Colly Gruczelak, my friend, fellow columnist and gardening enthusiast, surrounded by roses, roses and more roses. Next to an old apple tree and a gnarled cherimoya we enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch Colly brought while she shared stories about this rose nursery we were visiting called Roses of Yesterday.

To Beef or Not to Beef

“I enjoy cooking with wine,  sometimes I even put it in the food I’m cooking.”  - Julia Child Give me a good old American-style beef pot roast, with all its dark wine-rich drippings and a crusty French roll, and I am in heaven. In just one week, my...

EDITOR,

Dear Editor,

I reside at the end of a privately maintained old lumber road. On Friday, January 22, Scenic Way was blocked to all inbound and outbound traffic due to downed tree/power lines. Our neighborhood is fortunate to have an alternative access route when either Scenic or Park Drive closes. When one road closes, all residential traffic is funneled through this private section. Commentary: Time for some political homework

In my unofficial poll — well, while talking with friends since Tuesday’s election, anyway — it seems the one thing all voters have in common is a sense of relief that the interminable (and disgusting) political attack ads have ended. Gosh, wouldn’t it be refreshing — oh yeah, and informative — if candidates ran on their résumés? Firing zingers at other office seekers isn’t really one of the qualifications we were looking for.

Theater Review: Rapture, Blister, Burn

The recipe for a perfect play: Start with four cups of feminism. Add in three generations of ideals, two women in competition for the love of one man and a teaspoon of tepid testosterone. Throw in a dash of senior sass and millennial convictions, and you’ve got “Rapture, Blister, Burn,” now being performed by Peter Gelblum’s Mountain Community Theater in Ben Lomond’s Park Hall.
