Scotts Valley Fire Protection District has appointed Zachary “Zach” Raney to its Board of Directors, the district announced April 13.

Raney, a longtime resident of the Branciforte community, brings extensive community involvement and familiarity with local fire protection needs to the position.

He has lived in Branciforte for most of his life, the district said, and has served as a teacher and as a member of the Branciforte Advisory Commission, a group of appointed residents that assisted in the transition and merger of the Branciforte Fire District with the Scotts Valley Fire District.

“We are excited to welcome Zach to our Board of Directors,” said Board President Daron Pisciotta. “His long-standing connection to the Branciforte community and his experience working through the district reorganization process make him an invaluable addition to our Fire Board.”

Raney is an educator at Gateway School in Santa Cruz, where he works in the classroom while also serving the community. The district said his background in education provides skills in communication, problem-solving and engagement that will support his board role.

The appointment expands representation of the communities served by the fire district, including Branciforte, and is intended to maintain focus on local service needs.

Raney took the oath of office at the April 8 board meeting and will participate in ongoing district operations focused on fire protection and emergency services.

Scotts Valley Fire Protection District serves about 24,000 residents across a 30-square-mile area that includes Scotts Valley, Pasatiempo, Rolling Woods, Branciforte and Glenwood. The district provides fire suppression, emergency medical services and community education programs.
