Thirty years ago Al Haynes, of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, started the first River & Road Cleanup with the aid of the Valley Women’s Club. SLV students were involved from the start, joining families and friends and removing hundreds of tons of trash and recyclables.
On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Valley Women’s Club will be celebrating this 30-year community commitment to protecting the health of the San Lorenzo River. The celebration will take place at the Felton Covered Bridge Park, with games and refreshments, and displays honoring the many individuals and organizations involved in the cleanup.
Three sign-in stations will be set up this year, where individuals and groups can sign-in on Sept. 17, receive supplies and decide where to focus their efforts, any time from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In Felton, volunteers will check in at the Felton Covered Bridge Park. In Ben Lomond, the station will be set up on Highway 9 near Fillmore Street. In Boulder Creek, the station will be at the SLV Redemption/Recycling Center behind the Village Wash & Dry. The morning effort is co-sponsored by Save Our Shores at all sites.
Students can earn Community Service credit for the hours they work; forms are provided. The Redemption/Recycling Centers will process recyclable materials.
