This 2013 graduate of San LorenzoValleyHigh School has been a racer most of his life. He started at age seven with dirt bikes, and he did extremely well in races throughout the western United States. At the ages of 17 and 18, he won two pro dirt bike championships in Baja in the SCORE International Off-Road Racing series. In 2014 at age 18, Chad starting racing trucks in Baja.
In November 2015, he and his dad, Paul Broughton, drove his Bajalite truck to victory in his class again in the grueling 2015 Baja 1000 as well as all five of the races in the 2015 SCOREWorldChampionshipDesert Series!
The races are a family adventure with pit support, navigator and co-driver Chris Amos of Felton, (Chad’s uncle) and crew chief and navigator Jack Broughton of Scotts Valley, Chad’s grandfather. Long-time family friend Todd Mays of Ben Lomond was there as a navigator too.
Chad came to truck racing in early 2014 because of a serious wrist injury that eliminated dirt bike racing from his schedule for several months. He found that he likes racing both trucks and motorcycles. Mom, Mindi Broughton, was relieved that the trucks had roll cages and were safer than dirt bikes.
The sport of truck racing takes a lot of preparation time in the garage. Chad and his dad spend thousands of hours working on the truck (pre and post-race) and pre-running the course before the races. The truck had to be in excellent mechanical condition, they had to have tools and spare parts if it broke down during the race, they had to know the race course and having a good chase crew are the things that led to a successful 2015 race season.
In early December he was honored with the prestigious Milestone Award and the Class 3000 points championship award at the SCORE International Awards Banquet in San Diego.
In 2016 Chad and his racing crew will continue to race the SCORE desert series in Baja and hope to keep their winning streak alive.
