Watsonville coronavirus

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY—Santa Cruz County on Wednesday announced that a man in his 60s died from Covid-19 on Aug. 15.

County spokesman Jason Hoppin said that the man was unvaccinated and had underlying health conditions.

The death was the 210th in Santa Cruz County attributable to Covid-19, Hoppin said.

The man’s death comes as the Delta variant of the virus spreads rapidly across the world. County Health Officer Dr. Gail Newel recently reinstated a mandate to wear masks indoors, and the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a plan to require the county’s 2,400 employees to either get the Covid-19 vaccine or get tested weekly.

“Everyone is encouraged to get a free COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible,” Hoppin stated in a press release. “Vaccines prevent serious illness and death.”
