On June 18, the Scotts Valley Little League Rangers AAA team beat the Aptos Little League Red Sox AAA team 12-11 and, in turn, won the 2019 California District 39 Little League Minor Tournament of Champions (TOC). 

Ten girls from different local elementary schools ran in the ‘Girls on the Run’ 5 kilometer race on Saturday May 14, at Vasona Park in Los Gatos. Girls on the Run is a running group with special emphasis on confidence and morale boosting, self esteem and healthy choices for elementary aged girls. The group met at Baymonte Christian School in Scotts Valley for training twice a week, then joined with over 2,500 other girls to run the 5k (3.05 mile) loop in Vasona Park.

When we think of winners in high school sports, we think of those athletes that overcome adversity and pull out a victory after falling down. On rare occasion an athlete will come along that goes undefeated.

Scotts Valley High No. 1 tennis seed Malie Collins defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-3, on Oct. 20, as the Falcons beat Harbor, 7-0, to go 9-0 on the season.

Just like volleyball, the local high school water polo league has shuffled drastically in the transition from the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League to the Tri-County Athletic League. In the biggest local twist, the Scotts Valley Falcon girls have been assigned to a different-tiered league than the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars.

Waylon Prather and Harlan Prather are well-known names in Santa Cruz County. The San Lorenzo Valley High graduates — Waylon in 2003 and Harlan in 2006 — both went on to illustrious football careers in college, and Waylon is trying to sign with an NFL team as a punter.

A dozen young Scotts Valley gymnasts have their eyes set on victory after they all qualified for the USA Gymnastics National Championships earlier this month.
