Reporter goes on ride along with SVPD

On Tuesday, July 24, this reporter accompanied Scotts Valley Police Department Officer Paul Meier on a ride-along throughout the city. The trip allowed me to see through the eyes of an officer, and to understand what he does on a daily basis.

Home prices ‘inflated’ by tech giants

High-paying Silicon Valley employers like Google and Apple helped drive home prices up 16.9 percent in commuter-friendly Scotts Valley over the last 12 months, but new local and federal laws may cool that red-hot pace.

Healthy water requirements

I’m often asked by patients how much water they needs to drink each day. The Institute of Medicine has calculated that men need about 13 cups or 3 quarts of liquids and women need about 9 cups or 2 quarts of liquids daily. We also ingest approximately 2 ½ cups, or 20% of our daily intake of liquids from food, especially fruits and vegetables. In addition, beverages that we commonly drink such as coffee, juice, milk and soda are composed mostly of water.

Scotts Valley Police Dept. welcomes two female officers

Scotts Valley Police Chief Steve Walpole seems to be following the recommendations of several studies finding that woman police officers improve the overall performance and reduce complaints of police violence in major cities across the country. After several years of turnover and vacancies in the Scotts Valley Police Department, the department is now fully staffed with the addition of two new female police officers: Officer Meredith Roberts and Officer Pascal Wowak.

With the number of hotel rooms expected to double in Scotts Valley in the next 18 months, and with a  “fiscal cliff” lying ahead for the city budget, several city council members think it may be an opportune time to raise the local hotel room tax, called the Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).  The question, is by how much?

All about herbs

I’m helping my friend Colly, the food columnist for the Press Banner, with her cooking class at the new Boys & Girls Club in Scotts Valley. Colly has planned a summer program filled with delicious recipes and I’m looking forward to learning along with the kids in the class. The first week was all about eggs. I’m sure we’ll be using herbs in a future recipe so I’m getting my own herb garden ready. Whether you grow herbs in pots or in the ground here are some tips.

Scotts Valley’s city budget approaches a fiscal cliff

In view of the “fiscal cliff” lying ahead for the City of Scotts Valley, the city council is keeping its promise of looking for every possible way to improve the city’s fiscal situation.  At last week’s city council meeting, these efforts included a workshop on city fees, aimed at getting closer to cost recovery for some city services, and a discussion about raising the Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) or “local hotel room tax” from 10 percent of hotel room charges to 12 percent.

Plain talk about food: dealing with onions

The summer I was five years old my Aunt Betty outfitted me in ‘berry-picking-clothes’ which consisted of my oldest pair of Buster Brown shoes, a long-sleeved shirt, and a thin rope which had an empty Hills Bros coffee can attached and tied around my waist.  I was now ready for my first berry-picking adventure.
