With its majestic Redwood trees and rolling hills, the Santa Cruz Mountains are ideally perfect for building a “Hobbit” home. And that is exactly why Anna Pissanetzky and her husband Pablo decided to begin the endeavor of building one on their property in Scotts Valley.

You can tell right away when you walk out the door how hot or cold it is, how windy, shady, moist or dry. You know if your soil is pure sand or hard clay because you’ve dug a few holes in your time. And why are they so confusing in our area? The USDA Plant Hardiness zone map may tell you where a plant may survive the winter but climate zone maps let you see where that plant will thrive year round.

There’s something tempting for developers in the proposed Town Center development but, thus far, various ideas for the 58-acre parcel in downtown Scotts Valley have turned up short.

Granite Construction this week began the long-awaited $758,000 facelift at the intersection of Mt. Hermon Road, Scotts Valley Drive and Whispering Pines Drive.

After almost seven months since the Scotts Valley Water District’s well located near Orchard Run collapsed, construction is nearly complete on its replacement.

Last week Scotts Valley Mayor Jim Reed sat down for an interview with the Press Banner to discuss some important issues he hopes to address in his third mayoral term. There is no question for Reed a key economic driver for the city will be the addition of new hotels. According to Reed’s estimates, one hotel can generate enough transient occupancy tax revenue equivalent to what 1,823 single family homes or 10 grocery stores would generate.
