Scotts Valley
Scotts Valley High School is once again looking to pressure San Lorenzo Valley, the defending league champions with their veteran girls and boys cross country team.
“SLV is clearly the team to beat,” said Falcon Head Coach Doug Chase. “We have a strong core of returning runners who should give them a run for their money.”
Led by returning junior Vanessa Fraser along with co-captains Abby Utic and Krista McNulty, the Flacons will be running with most of their returning state meet team.
After finishing fourth in league last season the Falcon girls turned up the heat and finished second in the Central Coast Section behind SLV and advanced to the state meet.
Captain Sean Kennedy will head the boy’s team which finished second in league and seventh in CCS and will be joined by sophomore Scott Edwards and a talented group of young runners.
“In their perspective divisions this league has some of the best runners in the entire state,” said Doug Chase the Scotts Valley High cross country coach.
The Falcon team is comprised of 25 boys and 18 girls.
“We should fare better in league this year,” said Chase. “It is all up to the kids, we will see how it goes.”
SLV
Cougars Head Coach Rob Collins sees this as something of a banner year for San Lorenzo Valley High School.
“This could very well be the best SLV boys cross country team ever,” Collins stated “We have three guys running sub 9-minute two miles on this team.”
The Cougars are off to Hawaii to run in the King Kamehameha invitational cross country meet. Thirteen girls and nine boys will be accompanied by 10 parents as the Cougars run against Hawaii’s best high school runners at the University of Hawaii.
Junior Cody Johnson will be one of the Cougars top runners along with six other runners who have all come into their own.
Sophomore Anna Maxwell will look to defend her individual title while Abby Sherman and Claire MacMillan are also slated to be top finishers.
