Locals honored by college

  • Scotts Valley’s Kevin Kearney earned a place on the fall President’s List at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. Kearney earned at least a 3.7 GPA during the term.
  • Christopher Johnson of Boulder Creek achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA and was named to the President’s List at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, for the fall term.
  • Kelsea Moriarty of Bonny Doon and Parker Longwell of Scotts Valley were named to the fall Dean’s List at Whittier College in Whittier by earning at least a 3.7 GPA.

Reporter honored by Soroptimists
Scotts Valley resident Jondi Gumz, a Santa Cruz Sentinel reporter, was selected as the winner of the 2011 Capitola Soroptimists’ Ruby Award.
The Ruby Award is given for a woman helping women. Gumz will be honored at an awards dinner in Aptos on March 13, and a $500 cash award will be given Scotts Valley High School Parent Club to help buy a microscope, Gumz said. She planned to match the award to help purchase an American-made microscope for the biology class, which hopes to purchase 20.
Gumz was selected for her work covering business, housing, health care and the city of Capitola for the Sentinel, where she has worked since 1992.
Notable and award-winning work includes articles on the impact of a voter initiative to change the way immigrant children are taught English, a series on a gasoline additive contaminating local drinking water, a series explaining why children struggle with writing and a story on the resignation of the top woman in the University of California administration.
Gumz is a Wisconsin native and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ripon College.

Airman graduates from training
U.S. Air Force Airman Corderro R. Sweeney graduated with honors from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Sweeney completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
He is the son of Robert Sweeney of Boulder Creek and a 2007 graduate of San Lorenzo Valley High School.
SV student honored with scholarship
Scotts Valley High School senior Elisabeth Zweng was selected by the Santa Cruz Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution as a Good Citizen and was awarded a $300 scholarship.
The organization has 170,000 members in 3,000 chapters worldwide. Women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution are eligible for membership.
