Young mathematicians score big

Students from Scotts Valley Middle School, Baymonte Christian School and San Lorenzo Valley Middle School came away with honors at the 42nd annual Santa Cruz County Math Contest.
Students worked both as individuals and in teams. Individual short-answer tests were designed to reflect state standards for grades five, six and seven and for Algebra I courses. In teams, students had to use problem-solving and reasoning strategies to solve a complex problem.
Among nearly 500 county students at the contest Saturday, May 2, were these individual winners:
Baymonte Christian School: Jenna Forster and Tiffany Meson, honorable mention, eighth grade.
Scotts Valley Middle School: Rebekah Shulman, first place, sixth grade; Chloe Davis, second place, sixth grade; Scott Edwards, third place, seventh grade; Natalie Gallagher, Zoe Hur, Marika Swanberg and Jillian Koopman, honorable mention, sixth grade; Tyler Nicholson, Angelo Acker and Steve Lonhart, honorable mention, seventh grade; Marielle Fesmire, Jessica Granger-Jones and Colin Abel, honorable mention, eighth grade.
San Lorenzo Valley Middle School: Marika Swanberg, honorable mention, sixth grade.
Team competition produced these winners:
Baymonte: Connor Malesky, Celine Neudorf and Sean Anderson, third place, seventh and eighth grades.
Scotts Valley: Oscar Reksoatmodjo, Nevin Vattadi, Alec Vucinich, Tony Reksoatmadjo and Davis Rosca, honorable mention, fifth and sixth grades; Sydney Andres, Olivia Gonzalez, Jessica Granger-Jones, Sarah Pierce and Rachel Krzeczowski, second place, seventh and eighth grades.
They will receive their awards May 21.
SV grad named at MIT
Brooks Reed, a 2005 graduate of Scotts Valley High School, was selected as an MIT Presidential Fellow for graduate studies in the Ph.D. program in ocean engineering, which is jointly administered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

San Lorenzo Valley Middle School named these students of the month for April:
