The San Lorenzo Valley High disc golf club finished with the lowest score of the day in the inaugural round of play among Santa Cruz County schools, edging the second-place team from Soquel High.
The Cougars — led by overall winner Trevor Parker, who finished with a 6-under-par 48 on the 18-hole course at Aptos High on March 16 — finished with 283 shots, just ahead of Soquel’s 293.
Scotts Valley High, coached by English teacher Jamie Tuckey, who founded the league, finished third with 305 shots, followed by Harbor High and Aptos.
SLV had 10 disc golfers post scores, with the lowest five scores counting toward the team total.
For the Cougars, in addition to Parker, Elliot Ames shot 56; Prisco Crowley and Chris Greenly shot 59; and Dirk Harrison carded a 61.
Nature academy teacher Carter Milhouse and Felton’s Jack Trageser coach the SLV club.
Scotts Valley’s low scorers were Tommy D’Andrea, 57; Chris Bolanos, 58; Clayton Gross, 59; Michael Bell, 61; and Adam Bell, 70.
The league will play eight contests, including a season-ending championship round.
Aptos High and San Lorenzo Valley have full 18-hole courses, but organizers say they could set up courses at Harbor High and Scotts Valley High using portable baskets.
The league could also play at DeLaveaga Park, the 27-hole course in Santa Cruz where professional events are played each year.
The winner of the league will receive a trophy named after Nate Doss, a world-champion disc golfer who graduated from Soquel High.
