The Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high school track and field teams each had multiple winners in individual events at the May 5 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championship in Felton.
The top two finishers in each event qualified for the Central Coast Section Championship semifinals May 19 at Gilroy High School. The finals are the following Friday, May 25, also in Gilroy.
San Lorenzo Valley
The Cougar boys finished third in the SCCAL (94 points) behind Aptos (144) and Santa Cruz (131).
Individual and team champions were Cody Johnson in the 800-meter race (1 minute, 56.15 seconds) and in the 1,600 (4:27.54); Nick Hicks in the 3,200 (10:09.07); and the 4×400 relay team (3:27.98).
Other CCS qualifiers were Nick Hicks, who finished second in the 1,600 (4:30.12), and Landis MacMillan, who finished second in the 3,200 (10:16.67).
Other notables included Jacob Hicks, who was fourth in the 3,200 (10:31.38) and sixth in the 1,600 (4:47.26); Jonny Cooper, who was fourth in the 400 (51.78); and Billy Mullins, who finished fifth in the 400 (53.81).
MacMillan took third in the 1,600 (4:38.62); Matt Abernathy was sixth in the 3,200 (11:01.60); Dylan Miller was sixth in the 110 hurdles (18.37); Lucas Sinnott was fourth in high jump (5 feet, 9 inches); James Spriggs was fourth in pole vault (10-0); and Matt Phillips was third in shot put (41-8) and sixth in discus (108-4).
The girls team took fourth overall (79 points) and were led by Cameron Kellogg, who won the shot put (31-8) and discus (91-10).
Jen Housek won the 400 (59.96), and Anna Maxwell won the 3,200 (10:34.49) and took second in the 1,600 (4:51.37).
Other notables included Tori Madison, sixth in the 100 (13.17); Carly Sasscer, sixth in the 400 (1:09.20); Abby Sherman, third in the 800 (2:18.96); Claire MacMillan, fifth in the 1,600 (5:13.07) and fifth in the 3,200 (11:51.90); Jessica Germany, sixth in the 3,200 (12:18.64); the SLV 4×100 relay team, which finished third in 51.15; Lauren Wood, fifth in long jump (14-11); Amanda Lackides, third in pole vault (9-9); and Josie Wingert, fifth in pole vault (9-0).
Scotts Valley
The Falcon boys team finished fourth with 76 points, highlighted by Ricky Seago, who won the shot put (45 feet).
Scott Edwards qualified for CCS, running 1:58.10 — good for second place — in the 800. Weston Locke ran to second in the 110 hurdles (16.96); Alex Benko cleared 13-6 in pole vault for second; and Scotts Valley’s 4×100 (44.23) and 4×400 (3:31.41) teams also finished second.
Other athletes of note included Ryan Worman (11.34) and Steven Koflanovich (11.37), who finished fourth and fifth in the 100; Koflanovich, third in the 200 (23.02); Cody Giguiere, third in the 400 (51.46); Noah Beito, third in long jump (20-4½); Alec Bobbitt, seventh in high jump (5-7).
The Scotts Valley girls finished fifth with 69 points, led by Ranae Maloney who won the 300 hurdles in 46.42; Vanessa Fraser, second in the 3,200 (11:00.68); Darby McFall, second in the 110 hurdles (17.01); the 4×400 relay team, second in 4:08.65;
Other notables were Jessica Romeo, third in the 400 (1:01.62); Abby Utic (2:25.24) and Olivia Gonzalez (2:28.85), who finished fifth and sixth in the 800; Maloney, third in the 110 hurdles (17.22); Alex Kalinowski, fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.97) Alethea Ball, third in the 300 hurdles (49.58); Alex Foy, fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.87); Mikayla Fish, sixth in long jump (14-11) and fourth in triple jump (31-11); Lola Strbac, fifth in triple jump (31-4); Hanna Finis, sixth in discus (58-4); and Natalia Ebrahimian, fifth in shot put (27-2½).
