Kiwanis of the Valleys
After lengthy consideration, the Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley voted to change its name to Kiwanis of the Valleys. The name change reflects desire of the membership to expand the club’s good works into the San Lorenzo Valley, and to attract new members from the SLV communities. The club will revamp its brochure and website to reflect the change. Club members have begun initial work on the Annette Marcum Community Garden project, which will culminate in a full day of labor by the entire club on April 5, the Kiwanis International Day of Service. The club will also be joined in the project by members of the Surf City Kiwanis and the UCSC Circle K Club. The club donated $500 to the Circle K to help the community-minded young people attend a convention. Recruitment of sponsors for this summer’s Music at Skypark has begun.
Recent guest speaker Andy Immel, the board chair of Valley Churches United Missions, filled the club members in on how VCUM will continue its mission after the passing of Annette Marcum.
The club meets at 7 a.m. every Wednesday morning at Bruno’s BBQ, 230 Mount Hermon Road in Scotts Valley. The second Wednesday of each month is an evening meeting at Bruno’s at 6:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley Rotary
Scotts Valley Rotary enjoyed Rotary Night at a Santa Cruz Warriors game this month with club member Joanne Guzman singing the National Anthem. The club also sponsored computers and computer training for students in our area.
The club is excited to start a new project called Sister’s of Rotary. The first meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 1 at Bruno’s BBQ, 230 Mount Hermon Road. The group will plan projects to benefit women in the area.
Planning is also underway for the club’s luau at Hotel Paradox on May 2. The luau includes appetizers, live and silent auction, Hawaiian food, music and hula dancing. Tickets are $75 at http:/svrotaryluau.brownpapertickets.com or contact Susan Riddle at Bay Federal 477-8504.
On March 31, Kyle Thierman, founder of Surfing For A Change will speak to the club. He is a 23 year old pro surfer and activist. He surfs around the world, makes short videos encouraging people to create a better world through their actions and has been a speaker at TED talks. Guests are welcome at club meetings each Monday at Bruno’s BBQ from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley Host Lions Club
Scotts Valley Host Lions Club is a volunteer organization focused on Sight and Hearing causes. The club also helps the local community address their needs through hands-on projects and activities and have fun doing it. All are welcome to attend dinner meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and a breakfast meeting at 7 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month, both at Scotts Valley Senior Center, 370 Kings Village Road in Scotts Valley.
The San Lorenzo Valley Rotary
The San Lorenzo Valley Rotary and Interact Clubs will sponsor a food drive at Felton Safeway on April 12. Collected funds and food will go to Valley Churches United Missions.
Meeting Schedule for April will be feature valley artists. April 2: Nina Simon, Santa Cruz Museum of Art; April 9: Frank Leonard, Photography; April 16: A representative from the Sheriff’s Office; April 23: Margo Slowik, Valley Scenes; April 30: Chris Moorhead, Stained Glass. The club meets each Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. in Birch Dining Room at 37 Conference Drive at Mount Hermon Conference Center. Cost is $10.
Valley Women’s Club
Having just celebrated 37 years of community service, the Valley Women’s Club looks forward to a busy spring and summer. April brings Earth Day at the festival in Santa Cruz. May 17, the Environmental Committee will join in The Sanctuary Celebration on the Wharf. Volunteers are needed for The Redwood Mountain Faire, fast approaching on May 31 and June 1, at Roaring Camp in Felton. The Faire has 21 bands on two stages, artist-made artworks and crafts, children’s activities, silent auction, local wines and micro-brews, food, and entertainment for the entire family).
