At Mitty 13, Scotts Valley 5: The season came to a close for the No. 8 seed Falcons following a loss to the top seed Monarchs in the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday evening.
Senior Sofia Niklaus had three goals and one assist, while teammates Skylar Dufour and Sillon Fiorita each contributed one goal and one assist. Goalkeeper Lili Raif finished with nine saves for the Falcons.
“I am extremely proud of this team,” Scotts Valley head coach Colleen Niklaus said in an email. “Their grit, hard work, and what growth and improvement since the start of the season. Four straight years we have made it to CCS playoffs, quite an accomplishment.”
Scotts Valley stuck with Mitty for the first half, and trailed just 5-4 going into halftime. However, the Monarchs outscored the Falcons, 8-1, in the final two stanzas as they pulled away for the win. Niklaus said they were tired, and Sofia Niklaus was coming off a knee injury.
“We fell apart in the second half,” said Niklaus, who is stepping down from her position. “Even though we got many of the draws and therefore possession, Mitty did a good job of face-guarding Sofia and making it hard for her to get open and be involved in the offense. The rest of the team stepped up and continued to work hard.”
The Falcons finished with a 9-4 overall record, and they were runner-up in the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division with a 7-3 record in league play this season.
Mitty(4-10)—which placed sixth in the West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division with an 0-10 record in league play—will No. 5 Los Gatos (9-8) on Thursday at 5pm.
