Ben Lomond hosts potluck, square dance

Ben Lomond Village Alliance will host a community potluck and square dance on Friday, July 10, at Ben Lomond County Park on Mill Street.

The family-friendly event begins with a free community potluck from 6:30-7:30 p.m., followed by a square dance from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Music will be provided by the band Someone’s in the Kitchen, with caller Nina Berry leading participants through the dances.

Guests attending the potluck are encouraged to bring a favorite dish to share, along with their own plates and utensils. Drinks will be provided.

“The Community Potluck and Square Dance is a wonderful opportunity to gather with our friends and neighbors. It’s an opportunity to try some new food and make some new friends,” said Ariel Young, chair of the BLVA Social Committee.

The potluck is free, and admission to the square dance is $10. Advance registration for both events is recommended at benlomondvillage.org/events.

Loch Lomond event offers reservoir tours

Santa Cruz Water Department will host its annual Secchi Dip-In from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at Loch Lomond Reservoir.

The free event gives the public an opportunity to observe the water quality sampling process and learn how the reservoir is monitored to help keep it healthy. Attendees will also have the chance to take a guided pontoon boat tour aboard the Newell Jewell.

The event is part of the Santa Cruz Water Department’s Loch Lomond Learning Series. Space is limited. Reservations are required by calling 831-335-7424.

County roadside call boxes decommissioned

Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission has announced that the county’s roadside emergency call box system is being decommissioned.

The RTC previously managed about 65 call boxes along state Highways 1, 9, 17, 129 and 152. Officials said usage has declined significantly as motorists increasingly rely on cell phones and in-vehicle communication systems. Improved cellular coverage, ongoing maintenance challenges and the cost of operating the system also contributed to the decision.

The call boxes are no longer in service and should not be used to request emergency or roadside assistance. Motorists needing emergency assistance should call 911. More information is available at sccrtc.org.
