Candidate forums planned ahead of November election
Santa Cruz County Clerk/Elections Department and local city clerks are inviting residents interested in running for office in the Nov. 3 General Election to attend free Candidate Information Forums later this month.
The forums will provide information on candidate filing requirements, nomination papers, campaign finance obligations, ballot designations and key election deadlines. Attendees will also learn about resources available to candidates throughout the election process.
Candidate filing for local offices opens July 13 and closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 7.
Forums are scheduled for June 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and June 29 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Basement Community Room at 701 Ocean St. in Santa Cruz, and June 30 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room at 500 Westridge Drive in Watsonville.
Candidate guides, forms and additional election information are available on the Santa Cruz County Elections website. Questions regarding county, school and special district offices can be directed to the Santa Cruz County Clerk/Elections Department at 831-454-2060, while questions about city offices should be directed to local city clerks.
Rose to debut ‘Wild Women of the 60s’ at Kuumbwa Jazz
Singer and bandleader Pamela Rose will debut her new production, “Wild Women of the 60s,” on Thursday, June 25, at Kuumbwa Jazz.
The show blends concert and theater to celebrate the women songwriters who created some of the defining music of the 1960s. Through performances and storytelling, Rose explores the lives and work of songwriters including Carole King, Laura Nyro, Valerie Simpson, Cynthia Weil and Aretha Franklin.
The performance will feature songs such as “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Both Sides Now” and “Think.”
Rose will be joined by an ensemble band featuring Daria Johnson on drums, Ruth Davies on bass, Kristen Strom on saxophone, Janice Maxie Reed on keyboards and Nancy Wenstrom on guitar, with each musician also taking vocal turns throughout the show.
The performance begins at 7 p.m. on June 25 at Kuumbwa Jazz, 320-2 Cedar St. in Santa Cruz. Tickets and information are available at kuumbwajazz.org.
Annual Inspector General Report to be released Thursday
The annual report from the Santa Cruz County Office of the Inspector General will be released Thursday, June 25, and presented to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors during its June 30 meeting.
The Office of the Inspector General will also host a public meeting to discuss the report and answer questions from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 29 at the Greg Caput Community Room, 500 Westridge Drive in Watsonville.
The Office of the Inspector General may provide evaluations and make recommendations based on its investigations. Complaints may be filed directly with either the Sheriff’s Office or the Office of the Inspector General and can be submitted by phone, email, website form or written document. Information on submitting complaints, comments, suggestions, questions or requests is available on both agencies’ websites.
The Office of the Inspector General was established by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors in October 2022 as an independent monitor of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. The contract for the office was awarded to the OIR Group in March 2023.
