Kiwanis of the Valleys
It has been a busy time for the Kiwanis of the Valleys. The band selection process for 2015 Music at Skypark series was finalized and the exciting lineup was announced.
The July show will feature Skinny Ricky and the Casual Encounters opening for Aftershock.
In August, The Joint Chiefs will open with perennial favorites Extra Large headlining. The Coffis Brothers will once again close out the concert season at the September show, with some help from The Bourbon Brothers.
Admission is free and the shows are on the final Sunday of each month beginning at 2:30 p.m.
On Saturday, March 7, club members filled many bags with the trash they collected on the Scotts Valley section of southbound Highway 17.
The club acted as host to the Kiwanis division council meeting on Monday, March 16. Members from Kiwanis clubs in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties gathered to meet with the district lieutenant governor for the evening meeting at Bruno’s BBQ.
For the Kiwanis’ “K Day” international day of service, club members put in a hard — but rewarding — day of labor, performing demolition work to ready the building that will house the new Performing Arts Center of Scotts Valley.
The Kiwanis meet at 7 a.m. every Wednesday morning at Bruno’s BBQ. The second Wednesday of each month is an evening meeting at Bruno’s at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.kiwanisofthevalleys.org/
Valley Women’s Club
The Valley Women’s Club’s Annual Meeting, held on Sunday, March 22, gave more than 100 attendees the opportunity learn about the Valley Women’s Club’s wide-ranging activities.
Attendees also had the chance to see and hear many of those involved in the organization, including board members and committee chairs, as well as Matt Harris, new director of the SLV Redemption/Recycling Centers, and Violet Smith, director of the Redwood Mountain Faire — scheduled for May 30 and 31.
Thanks to Fifth District Supervisor Bruce McPherson, the gathering was updated on crucial topics in a State of the District talk.
State Assemblymember Mark Stone provided insights into proposed legislation in the Assembly, and its impact locally. State Sen. Bill Monning spoke about significant issues he was focusing on in his bills this session.
All three provided new information and a greater understanding of their skills representing Santa Cruz County and the legislative process. 
Finally, a special honor was bestowed by the VWC on Jeffrey Smedberg, who recently retired from the Public Works Department of the County of Santa Cruz. Jeffrey was Recycling Coordinator for the County; his dedication to the environment, and commitment to assuring excellent recycling opportunities to county residents at the lowest possible cost, had helped guarantee wise and responsible decisions for the VWC’s recycling centers, and for the SLV residents it serves.         
The Valley Women’s Club is expanding its focus on vital issues for women, young and old, through a series of workshops and panel discussions on important issues affecting their lives. Topics will include providing support for long-term caregivers, helping women confront end-of-life decisions, pregnancy and birthing choices, economic guidance and more.

Scotts Valley Rotary
Rotarians Danny Reber, Cheryl Rebottaro, and Club President Laureen Youngmeyer had a great time in February at the Scotts Valley Middle School — talking to and meeting with the kids of “Interact,” a group of kids dedicated to fundraising and reaching out to others who are not as fortunate.
Scotts Valley Rotary is proud to sponsor and mentor such young kids with such great big hearts.
Rotarian Teresa Landers and husband Gary Landers joined the Peace Corps before retiring and will be spending two years in Botswana. They told us what they had to do to be selected and how they are preparing for this great adventure.
Another fantastic Interact member, Ann Codiga, spoke to us about helping African girls in puberty stay in school.
Rotarians Georgie Hildebrant and Rosanna Hurerra spoke about the work they have been doing with Feeding Dreams Cambodia, a vocational training center global grant.
Saturday, May 9, marks the 1st Annual Trivial Cup Challenge Fundraiser benefiting the Scotts Valley Rotary Club. The event will be held upstairs at Bruno’s BBQ and will feature food, drinks, prizes, and, of course, bragging rights. 
Sign ups are still being accepted for teams of up to eight people. The cost is $50 per person.
