Council Approves $6,000 for Tree Lighting | News Briefs

The Scotts Valley City Council has approved $6,000 for a tree lighting at the Walgreens parking lot in the King’s Village Shopping Center next month.

Traditionally the event has been funded by the Scotts Valley Parks & Recreation Advocates nonprofit, but that organization is currently in the process of being “unwound,” Interim City Manager Brian Haddix said at the Oct. 20 City Council meeting.

As such, Haddix said, the funds will be taken out of the City’s general fund, and the municipality will later recover that expense from an account designated for Scotts Valley Parks & Recreation “amenities” that has roughly $109,881 remaining.

Council must approve any spending from this account, Haddix added.

City Council member Donna Lind said in the past the Advocates would pay the electricity costs of the tree lights, and publicly thanked the family that offered to cover this again.

Lind said the Exchange Club of Scotts Valley is also working on another tree lighting event that’s separate from the City’s, and lauded Victor Alejandro for his efforts to organize that.

Service for Late SLV Educator Set

A celebration of life for late San Lorenzo Valley teacher Robert Lahey will be held on Nov. 14 at San Lorenzo Valley High.

All are welcome to attend the ceremony, which will happen on the football field at 1pm.

A mass is scheduled for the previous day at Resurrection Catholic Church, 7600 Soquel Drive in Aptos. That will start at 1pm.

Lahey, a teacher in the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District for at least two decades, died on Sept. 2 after battling cancer.
