High schoolers stage telethon for sports, arts
Students from Scotts Valley, San Lorenzo Valley and other Santa Cruz County high schools will participate in a telethon Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2, to support school athletic and arts programs threatened by imminent budget cuts.
The telethon, located at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, will be broadcast live on Community Television of Santa Cruz (Comcast Channel 25, Charter Channel 71).
Students will perform skits, musical numbers and cheers and will be interviewed while they field contributors’ calls. They also will make calls to families and businesses to solicit donations.
The telethon is the brainchild of Ken Thomas, a former Scotts Valley High School principal.
Big Bigfoot barbecue
Felton’s Bigfoot Discovery Museum and Los Gatos-based North America Bigfoot Search will join forces to unveil information about reports of Northern California Bigfoot sightings at a barbecue hosted at the museum, 5487 Highway 9, from noon to 4 p.m. June 7.
The event will feature a talk by David Paulides, author of “Tribal Bigfoot,” a new study of reported sightings that includes several in Santa Cruz County.
Paulides, a former police investigator, also wrote an earlier book on the sightings, “The Hoopa Project.”
Rec district wins grant
A $2,000 grant to the Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District will fund two new programs: Family Art Nights and Family Movie Nights. The grant came from the Carol Anicka Memorial Fund for San Lorenzo Valley and is administered by Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.
The district recently was recognized as the 2009 Most Outstanding Small District by the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts, according to Christina Horvat, BC district manager.
