Forty-five years ago, in July 1966, Medicare was launched. Seniors were finally provided a pathway to plan and save for their retirement, and for the first time in U.S. history, it gave them a guarantee of health coverage, and with it the peace of mind that medical bills would no longer drive them into poverty.

Ethan James Wolff was born to Jennifer Anne and Ryan Peter Wolff of Scotts Valley at 4:10 a.m. June 22, 2011, at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces.

• Sami Logan Belville-Powell was born at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009, to Katie Colleen Belville and Travis Paris Powell of Boulder Creek. He weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.
