Directed by Shanelle Atchley, Baymonte Christian School put on its annual talent show at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz on Friday, Feb. 7.

When the soldiers came home from World War II, they brought back a new perspective for a new America. Rather than continuing a rural existence, most citizens were ready for a modern lifestyle supported by technology — dams, suburbs, shopping malls, interstate highways — and all the natural resources that could be gobbled up.

I'll be the first to admit, it's hard to bundle yourself up to go out and work in the garden on a cold winter day. Bright sunshine sure helps, but still, it's not T-shirt weather yet.

With 2011 behind us, we have to look back and appreciate a great past year for fishing and also hope for a positive New Year for fish and fishing.

Sanddabs might not be known for their fighting ability, but they are a favorite for the table. The number of sanddabs in the Monterey Bay right now is staggering, and anglers are cleaning up on these little flat fish.
