Good news has just come from the California Department of Public Health, which recently reported that the state’s adult smoking rate has hit a record low. Last year, 11.9 percent of the state’s adults smoked, down from 13.1 percent in 2009. By comparison, in 1984, 26 percent of our state’s adults smoked.

Bravo to fireworks production crew

The second contest of the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League season resulted in a win for the local Santa Cruz Mountains high school surf team made up of surfers from San Lorenzo Valley High, Scotts Valley High, and St. Francis High.

My friend Syd died the other day. Sydney “Pops” Osenga was 94 years old and a resident of Mount Hermon since 1963. I first met Syd about 15 years ago, when he was a patient of mine. I felt a kindred spirit with him, and we struck up a friendship that grew over the years.
