Realistically, shopping has mostly replaced the spiritual, religious and ideological roots of the holiday season. The U.S. and western world’s economic well-being hinges on it. Until somebody invents a functional, consumerism-less system that still guarantees prosperity, we must shop. Preferably in the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley, to avoid gargantuan traffic jams at the malls.

This week, Bonny Doon met another obstacle in its effort to localize control of its fire coverage. A judge ruled that the Santa Cruz Local Agency Formation Commission’s 2008 denial of an application by Bonny Doon Fire and Rescue Inc. to create its own district was done properly.

Last time, I discussed how to identify and understand wines by color, clarity and smell. Tasting is the most important part, of course, and there are some characteristics that will help explain why certain wines taste and feel different in your mouth.

Austin Twohig’s wine column, headlined on the Press-Banner’s March 18 front page as “A local winery ditches its Roudon-Smith label...,” led readers astray with the inaccurate intimation that Roudon-Smith wines had vanished. That’s simply not the case.
