Albacore bite breaks open with warm water

It has been at least three years since the last good albacore season. We have had small teases the past few years, but the red-hot fishing we saw in the late 1990s and first years of this millennium just disappeared.

The Wine Lover: Sneak a peek with a master home winemaker

This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing a local Scotts Valley resident who is an amateur winemaker. It’s always interesting to meet other home winemakers, because you can bounce ideas off each other and compare stylistic differences.

Let’s Go Fishin’: Ocean waters start to cool

We have started the winter pattern with a few shots at light rain and storm fronts that bring southerly winds, with that the ocean temperatures are starting to cool. We had record-breaking ocean temperatures this year as the MontereyBay buoy read 68 degrees the third week of July. At this time the current sea temperature reading is 57 degrees.

2015 Open Studios

The goal of the Open Studios Art Tour is to get artists and art fans together. All across Santa CruzCounty, artists open their studios and their supporters go on tour. The public visits the studios and meet the artists. The visitors get to see how the artist does his or her work and can buy art directly from the source.

Earl often told his four children—Alice, Martha, Guy Jr. and Eleanor—bedtime stories about his own childhood in “The Enchanted Valley” of the Owens River. ”I had the great good fortune,” he believed, “of spending my boyhood in the midst of majestic surroundings and wondrous beauty —where I walked in Paradise.” “To listen to Father,” remembered son Guy Jr., “one would think that he had spent the major portion of his life in the EnchantedValley.” In fact, his tenure there lasted only half a dozen years.
