About 10 years ago, there was an advertisement on TV for the then-new Gillette Mach3 razorblade. It showed a beefed-out guy shaving his face, wearing nothing but a towel, while admiring himself in the bathroom mirror, just as a jet fighter plane flew overhead and a supermodel ran into the room and touched his face.

My previous column described the nuclear plant disaster in Japan and its possible effects on us here in California (“Radiation exposure worries dispelled,” March 25, Page 9). Now I’d like to explain about the effects of radiation on the human body.

I’d like to make my annual plea for the liberal use of sunscreen to protect all of us, young and old from the damaging effects of the sun.
