Ella Maria Gomez was born at 1 p.m. Feb. 12, 2013, to Julie Barbara Bahr and Juan Manuel Gomez of Ben Lomond. She weighed 9 pounds, 5 ounces at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

n Kaden James Thomsen was born at 3:27 a.m. Sept. 2, 2011, to Soquel residents Kassandra Eirene Teegardin and Erik John Thomsen, a San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate. Kaden weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces when he arrived at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center in Santa Cruz. His paternal grandmother, Carole Hatch, lives in Ben Lomond.

Jeremy Immel, son of Andy and Cathy Immel of Boulder Creek, and Demerris Brooks, daughter of Dennis and Rebecca Donaldson of San Jose, were married April 19 on Kauai, Hawaii.

Two hurricanes located west of the Baja California coast sent a south swell into Monterey Bay this past week. The swell brought warm water with it and turned off the rockfish and halibut bites. But the warm water push did liven up the albacore action.

Driving through northern Canada and Alaska some years ago, I was struck by the amount of litter and trash I encountered. The striking terrain and natural beauty all around made such clueless disregard seem particularly onerous.
